Robert A. Nowlan Jr was born on 23 JUL 1934. He is the 1. child of Robert A. Nowlan (10 SEP 1909)
and Marian J Shields (12 AUG 1913).
Robert A. Nowlan (Bob) is a scholar, researcher, teacher, writer, storyteller, lecturer,
and has published more than two dozen books on subjects as diverse as mathematics,
movies, presidencies and trivia. As an undergraduate, he pursued a double major,
mathematics and history. This combination seems strange to many, but he always
explores whatever interests him. He was in the U.S. Army when the U.S.S.R. launched
Sputnik. Because Nowlan's MOS. was mathematics, he was discharged three days later
as were thousands of the military with talents that were believed needed to make the
U.S. competitive with the Soviets. As Bob was preparing to pursue a Ph.D., the question was which discipline, history or mathematics. Although he felt he was more talented in history than mathematics, the National Science Foundation made the decision for him. There were funds available for graduate study in math and the sciences, but not for history and the liberal arts, which he considers a shame. However, he never lost his passion for history and political science, Nowlan received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Nowlan was a Professor of Mathematics at colleges and universities for forty years and also served as Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Southern Connecticut University. Since his retirement Bob Nowlan has written several more books including The American Presidents Form Washington to Tyler, What They Did, What They Said, What Was said About Them It is probably easy to guess the titles of the next three books in the series. Bob lives with his wife Wendy and dog Jessie in Marco Island, Florida eight months of the year and four summer months in New Haven, Connecticut.
